During 2009, the world renown, Abraham Concepcion, a leading big game fly fishing angler and guide, joined the lodge's pro staff and has added a new dimension to our fly fishing program.
Born and raised in the Golfito area, Abraham began his fishing career as a commercial fisherman and continued as a captain at local lodges. During 1998, he began his fly fishing career at Golfito Sailfish Rancho where he honed in on his skills and took the art of fly fishing for billfish to a new level.
Abraham presently shares his passion and knowledge at The Zancudo Lodge by teaching novice to seasoned anglers how to cast and fight a billfish with complete ease and skill.
The following information is The Zancudo Lodge's recommended fly gear for fly-fishing.
For beginners:
RODS
-12-12/13 weight rod, 9 foot, best for traveling is a 3 or 4 piece rod.
REELS
-12, 12/13 reel with a large arbor.
To put more fight to a sailfish or marlin:
-13-13/14, 14 weight rod 9 foot

-13, 13/14 or 15 large arbor reel.
Fly Line:
Billfish floating fly line for popper flies. Sinking tip or intermediate line for those using streamer flies.
Backing line-50-65 braided line
Leader material:
60-80 pound mono for the butt section.
Class tippet, Mason 20 lb.
Shock tippet, 80-100 mono.
Hooks:
Tiempco 6/0, 7/0, 8/0.
Tandem material –wire, not stainless.
Flies:
Abraham's billfish popper flies will be available at the lodge-rigged and ready!
For Inshore Fly Fishing:
